Abstract

This research is aimed of describing the form and classifying the intention of directive utterance. The object is directive utterances. The data are sentences containing directive intention. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method by selecting the directive utterance, which can be found in English translation of Koran especially chapter Ali-Imron. To describe the form, the writer refers to grammatical rules of English intention. While to describe the intention, the writer uses pragmatics approach especially speech acts theory. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds that first; the patterns of form of the directive utterances are negative imperative, positive imperative, interrogative, and declarative. The second; the speaker’s intentions are commanding/ordering, requesting, suggestion, warning, and invitation. Commanding, warning, invitation and requesting are called direct locution utterance, because it is often uttered in imperative sentence. Suggestion is called indirect illocution utterance. The speaker of the utterance is God who the addressees are Prophet, believer, human being, the disbeliever, and the Jews. The utterances mostly talk about Tauhid

Abstract

This research paper aims at describing the language form, the politeness strategy, and the intention of directive utterances used in Donald Duck comic’s manuscript. To achieve the objectives, the writer refers to language form theory to identify the language from of directive utterances, Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness to identify the politeness strategy, Austin’s theory of speech act to describe the intention of directive utterances. The type of this research is qualitative research. The method of collecting data is documentation method, and the steps are reading the comics, finding, noting, retyping, coding the data. The writer analyzes the data of directive utterances by using descriptive analysis. The result of the study shows that the language form of directive utterances in Donald Duck comics manuscript are positive declarative sentence(33.33%), negative declarative sentence (6.67%), positive imperative sentence (35.56%), negative imperative sentence (6.67%), positive interrogative sentence (13.33%), and negative interrogative sentence (4.44%). The politeness pattern used in Donald Duck comics manuscript are bald on record (42.22%), positive politeness (26.67%), negative politeness (24.44%), and off record (6.67%). The implicature of directive utterances used in Donald Duck comics manuscript belongs to conventional implicature, and the intention are commanding/ordering (33.33%), requesting (37.78%), prohibiting (6.67%), and suggesting (22.22%). Abstract

This research is a qualitative research. This research proposes to describe the meaning of directive utterance, and to analyze the politeness pattern of each directive utterance found in The Secret of Vacul Castle’s comic strip. The data are taken from The Secret of Vacul Castle’s comic strip. The method of collecting data is documentation. The writer collets the data by reading The Secret of Vacul Castle’s comic strip, classifying the serial which contains directive utterances, underlining the directive utterances found in The Secret of Vacul Castle’s comic, and coding the collected data in the list, in which data list of the data number. The techniques of analyzing data are describing the story context of The Secret of Vacul Castle’s comic strip serial, explaining the illocutionary act on the directive utterances found in The Secret of Vacul Castle comic strip serials, determining the category of directive utterances found in The Secret of Vacul Castle comic strip serials, analyzing the politeness strategy used on the directive utterances found in The Secret of Vacul Castle comic strip serials and making the conclusion as the result of the research. The results of the research are: 1) The meaning of directive utterance are 6 data or 20 % as the commanding category, 14 data or 46.67 % as the requesting category, 7 data or 23.33 % as the warning category and 3 data or 10% as the suggesting category, 3)The politeness strategies found of directive utterance in The Secret of Vacul Castle’s comic are 12 data or 40 % as the bald on record strategy, 1 data or 3.33 % as the off-record strategy, 10 data or 33.33% as the positive politeness strategy and 7 data or 23.33% as the negative politeness strategy.

Abstract

This research studies about the pragmatic analysis of directive utterances in life as we know it movie’s manuscript. The object of research paper is the movie manuscript entitled Life as we know it. The study is to analyze the directive utterance of life as we know it movie subtitling in this research by pragmatic theory. The study belongs to a qualitative study. In this method, the writer wants to describe about the linguistic form of directive utterances and the politeness. In this research paper, the writer uses data in the form of sentences taken from the Life as We Know It movie’s manuscript. The data source of this research is the directive utterance in the Life as We Know It movie’s manuscript. The technique of data analysis in this study is clarifying, describing, analyzing the linguistic form of directive utterance and analyzing politeness that contents in each directive utterance. The result of the study shows the following conclusion that 80 data researcher find directive uterance are expresion comanding, requesting, suggesting data, the writer finds 37 data or 49.33 % as the commanding category, 33 data or 37.33 % as the requesting category, and 10 data or 13,33 % as the suggesting category. Second, from 75 data the researcher find four politeness categories in directive utterance are bald on record, off record, positive politness,negative politness. 38 data (50.67 %) of bald on record, 8 data (10.67%) off record, 23 data (30.67%) of positive politeness, and 6 data (8.00%) of negative politeness.

ABSTRACT: This research is aimed of describing the intention and describing the form of directive utterance. The object is directive utterances. The data are sentences containing directive intention in the English translation of Holy Al-Qur’an particularly on the verses of five pillars of Islam. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method by selecting the directive utterance in the English translation of Holy Al-Qur’an particularly on the verses of five pillars of Islam. To describe the illocution, the writer uses pragmatic approach especially speech acts of Kreidler’s theory. While to describe the form the writer refers to Frank’s theory. The result of the study shows that (1) there are three types of intention that found in the data; they are intention of commanding (71%), the intention of prohibiting (26%), and the intention of requesting (3%). There are two types of sentence that can be found in the data the first is imperative sentence (83%) and the second is declarative sentence (17%).

A Pragmatic Analysis On Directive Utterances In Despicable Me Movie And It’s Subtitle

Abstract

This study aims at describing the varieties of pragmalinguistics form, the equivalence of illocutionary act and the equivalence of politeness pattern on directive utterances in Despicable Me movie and it’s subtitle. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The data are sentence containing directive acts in Despicable Me movie and it’s subtitle. Documentation and observation are method to collect the data. Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer finds that 1) the varieties of pragmalinguistics form are 32 (26.7%) data using internal modification of pragmalinguistics form. 13 (12.5%) data using syntactic downgraders, 17 (14.2%) data using Lexical/ Phrasal downgraders and 1 (0.8%) datum combining of syntactic and lexical/ phrasal downgraders and upgraders. 2) in the equivalence of illocutionary act, the writer finds 119 (99.17%) data equivalence. They are 61 (50.83%) data of requesting, 46 (38.33%) data of commanding and 6 (5%) data of suggesting and warning. The writer finds only 1 (0.8%) datum non equivalence in the form of commanding. 3) in the equivalence of politeness pattern, the writer finds 115 (95.83%) data equivalence. They are 59 (49.17%) data that using bald on record strategy. 39 (32.5%) data using positive politeness strategy. 14 (11.7%) data using negative politeness strategy and 3 (2.5%) data using off record of politeness strategy. The writer finds 5 (4.17%) data non equivalence. 2 (1.67%) data of positive politeness strategy and 3 (2.5%) data of negative politeness.
