GERUND

GERUNDS AFTER PREPOSITIONS
Bentuk gerund: infinitive(verb1 + -ing)
Contoh:
Going to parties is fun. I enjoy reading.
Gerund is subject Gerund is object
A. Gerund sebagai subject:
• Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences.
• The study abroad program might satisfy your desire for new experiences. (gerund sudah dihilangkan.)
B. Gerund sebagai object:
• They do not appreciate my singing.
• They do not appreciate my assistance. (gerund sudah dihilangkan)
C. Gerund sebagai subject complement:
• My cat’s favorite activity is sleeping.
• My cat’s favorite food is salmon. (gerund sudah dihilangkan.)
D. Gerund sebagai object dari preposition:
• The police arrested him for speeding.
• The police arrested him for criminal activity. (gerund sudah dihilangkan.)

• We need to keep on going.

• We can talk about going home.
• I’m tired of hearing excuses.
• You can’t learn English without making mistakes.
Jika kita ingin memakai sebuah kata kerja setelah preposition (kata depan), itu harus berupa ;gerund’ karena infinitive tidak mungkin digunakan setelah preposition.
Contoh:
• I will call you after arriving at the office.
• Please have a drink before leaving.
• I am looking forward to meeting you.
• Do you object to working late?
• Tara always dreams about going on holiday.
Kita bisa mengganti seluruh gerund di atas dengan noun.
• I will call you after my arrival at the office.
• Please have a drink before your departure.
• I am looking forward to our lunch.
• Do you object to this job?
• Tara always dreams about holidays.
